"Die antike Stadt Uruk (Süd-Irak) war seit dem 4. Jt. v. Chr in hohem Masse an der Entwicklung komplexer politischer Entitäten in Mesopotamien beteiligt. Die Entstehung einer straff organisierten urbanen und administrativen Struktur hatte grossstadtähnliche Besiedlung zur Folge, prägte die Vorstellung von 'Stadt' in Mesopotamien und war Motor für überregionalen Ideen- und Wirtschaftsaustausch. Die damalige überregionale Macht Uruks ging im 3. Jt. v. Chr. verloren, jedoch spielte die Stadt bis in das 3./4. Jh. n. Chr. als anerkanntes religiöses, kulturelles und ökonomisches Zentrum im Süden Mesopotamiens eine bedeutende Rolle. Wissenschaftlich berühmt wurde die Stadt wegen ihrer grossflächig erhaltenen Befunde zur "Uruk-Zeit" (4. Jt. v. Chr.), aber auch dem Nachweis bedeutender intellektueller Leistungen in den nachfolgenden Jahrtausenden. 2013 jährte sich der Beginn archäologischer Forschungen zu Uruk zum einhundertsten Mal. Aus diesem Anlass richtete die Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft ein internationales Colloquium aus, dessen Ergebnisse nun in achtzehn Beiträgen, herausgegeben von Margarete van Ess, publiziert werden. Themenschwerpunkte sind Uruk und Phänomene der 'Uruk-Welt' in der späten Uruk-Zeit sowie die Geschichte der Stadt bis in die Seleukidenzeit.
